Bio
Rachel Williams is a mixed media artist. Her bold, quirky and apparently playful works often carry a brooding gritty undertone. By employing an agglomeration of printmaking, painting, collage, stitching onto a variety of surfaces her work is a lively regurgitation of current obsessions which range from history to politics. Her most recent output concerns the vulnerability of existence in the natural world with inspiration coming from iconography and primitive depiction of the cave paintings of Lascaux and Australia. Greatly influenced by her surroundings the affect of moving to St Leonards on Sea from rural Italy in 2017 has produced a profound shift in subject matter and process. With a movement away from abstracts to a more urban, satirical approach. Born and educated in New Zealand, (DipVCD) with a major in printmaking. Now based St Leonards On Sea via stints in London and Italy. Works are held in private collections: Italy, UK, Belgium, USA, Canada, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand. Galleries Kellie Miller Gallery - Brighton Rye Bank Gallery - Rye Statement For me making works is all about fear. It’s fear that draws me back to printing as a way of making marks and never more so than when I’m making mono prints. The sensation as I draw back the paper/cloth or whatever is thrilling and in that moment it is almost as if the work is made by someone else and I can see it clearly and where I am to go with it. It has pervaded all my other works this “transference” from one surface to another.
